What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is a specialized form of medical care designed to prioritize comfort and quality of life for individuals facing a terminal illness. Rather than focusing on curative treatments, hospice focuses on palliative care by managing pain and symptoms so that patients can live as fully and comfortably as possible.

Who qualifies for hospice care with Omega Hospice Care?

Patients generally qualify when they have a life‑limiting condition with a prognosis of about six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Hospice is also appropriate when curative treatments are no longer working or are no longer what the patient wants, and the focus shifts to comfort and support.

3. When is the right time to start hospice?

It is usually better to start hospice early enough for patients and families to receive the full range of services and support. Many families wait until a crisis, but hospice can help much sooner with symptom control, planning, and emotional and spiritual care.

7. How often will hospice staff visit?

Hospice staff make regular, scheduled visits based on the patient’s needs and the plan of care, and visit frequency can increase during times of change or crisis. In addition, clinicians are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to address urgent needs, questions, or concerns.

8. Can I keep my own doctor?

Yes, patients may continue to use their regular doctor while receiving hospice care. The hospice team coordinates closely with the patient’s physician to align treatment with the patient’s goals and ensure smooth, high‑quality care.

9. What if my doctor hasn’t mentioned hospice?

If your doctor has not brought up hospice, you can ask whether hospice is appropriate given your diagnosis and goals. With your permission, Omega Hospice Care can also communicate with your physician to review your condition and discuss whether hospice support would be beneficial.

4. Where are hospice services provided?

Omega Hospice Care provides services wherever the patient calls home, including private residences and other community settings in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and surrounding communities. Hospice care has no “homebound” restriction, so patients can still leave home as they are able and wish.

5. What services does Omega Hospice Care provide?

Services include pain and symptom management, medication and medical equipment coordination, nursing and aide visits, emotional and spiritual support, and education for family caregivers. The hospice team also offers counseling and bereavement support to help families before and after a loss

6. Who is on the hospice care team?

The hospice team typically includes physicians, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains or spiritual counselors, and trained volunteers. Each member works together with the patient and family to create an individualized plan that reflects the patient’s goals, values, and cultural or spiritual preferences.

10. Will I still be able to make my own decisions?

Yes, patients remain in control of their care and can make decisions about treatments, services, and where they receive care. Advance directives and living wills are honored, and the team will help ensure that care reflects the patient’s wishes as closely as possible.

11. What support is available for my family and caregivers?

14. Who pays for hospice care?

Most hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and many private insurance plans. Omega Hospice Care can review your coverage, answer questions, and help you understand any potential out‑of‑pocket costs.

15. Can hospice care be stopped if my condition improves?

Yes, if a patient’s condition stabilizes or improves and hospice is no longer appropriate, they can be discharged from hospice and return to regular medical treatment. Hospice services can be resumed later if needed and if eligibility requirements are again met.

16. What happens if I live longer than six months?

Patients are not automatically discharged at six months; hospice care can continue as long as they continue to meet eligibility criteria. The hospice team will regularly review the patient’s condition and update the plan of care as needed.

17. Does hospice mean we are “giving up”?

Hospice does not mean giving up; it means choosing comfort, dignity, and quality of life when cure is no longer possible or desired. Many families find that hospice actually gives them more time and energy to focus on meaningful moments together.

18. Can patients receive spiritual support even if they are not religious?

Yes, spiritual care in hospice is about supporting what gives each person meaning, hope, and peace, whether religious, spiritual, cultural, or personal. Chaplains and counselors respect all beliefs and can coordinate with the family’s own faith or community leaders if requested.
